The Man and the Fish

When a man falls into water
he knows that he is wet
because he knows
what it means to be dry.
A fish does not know
that in water it is wet
and on land it is dry
But it does know that it will die
if it does not return to the water.
When a man looks at the stars
and wonders what it means to be alive
he may consider
that he will never know the answer
unless he knows how it feels to be dead.
Now the man and the fish are even.
They are one and the same.
And like the fish, the man now understands
that the meaning of his life
is really just to live.
